Rhy ThorntonRhy was an avid computer hobbyist as a child and helped develop the online fabric that eventually became the internet (and authored some pretty terrible video games!). During the mid 90s he brought many businesses, individuals, and schools online for the first time. He then went on to work as a web developer during the DotCom era, eventually transitioning into Server Maintenance and Provisioning. Soon he evolved into managing Network Infrastructure, Building physical and virtual servers and services, and eventually becoming a Linux expert and working as a consultant in many different Data Centers. After a time helping ISPs across the US manage their services and infrastructure, he held several positions as CTO or IT Director both in the private and public sector, including a stint as IT Director for 13 school districts. Our team now uses that experience and knowledge to help individuals and businesses architect hassle-free IT solutions with an eye towards sustainability, and extremely low overhead.
We now have a small team servicing many clients throughout the Western United states including California, Arizona, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, and Hawaii. From individuals to large universities, there are routers, firewalls, servers, and even quite a few laptops and desktops actively serviced and monitored by ThorntonTechs.com. |

Linux: An anecdote
I had a client in the mid 90s that had me build them a database server. It was an in-house server with virtually no connection to the outside world or internet, and their needs were fairly minimal. In 2007 they moved offices to a new location. When they moved the server and turned it back on, they were not able to connect to the database. I traveled back to Riverside, California to look at it directly, and connected a monitor to see if the machine was actually booting. It was, but the network jack had been damaged in the move. I tracked down an identical network card, installed it, and they were back up in no time. This is a machine that had been running without incident for more than a decade, and I have not heard from them since. My guess is that this server is still doing it's job almost 20 years later! Of course I don't recommend this kind of hands-off IT infrastructure, things should be monitored, upgraded, and otherwise maintained in a reasonable fashion. But this is a good testament to how unbelievably reliable an old Linux server can be! - Rhy
